Join us in celebrating today, National Ice Cream Soda Day, without sugary sluggishness – pair Zizzie with your favorite ice cream for a retro treat that won’t hold you back.
Bonus points if you pair with a health-conscious cream, like Halo Top, to still feel your absolute best after. That said, treating yourself to a combo like Tillamook’s vanilla bean with our strawberry peach soda is also totally ok. Do what feels right! A treat is a treat!
Most likely created in 1874 by Robert Green, he substituted the usual ice served in soda at the time with ice cream when he ran out of ice shavings. Some sources say that this was an accident driven by necessity, although a personal account published by Green in 1910 clarifies that he deliberately experimented to make a new drink that would draw customers away from rival soda vendors. Anyway, it was an instant hit and it remains popular to this day.
Along with the classic treat, however, typically comes a lot of unwanted sugar. Pairing a standard coke or pepsi with ¼ cup of ice cream could total more than 40 grams of sugar. In our opinion, that is too high a risk of a sugar crash for a Thursday. We’ve still got stuff to do!
Here are some awesome pairings we’ve tested in the Zizzie Lab. Feel free to them and make them your own with split scoops or other flavors:
Peach Strawberry with Cookie Dough ice cream – tastes like a peach cobbler
Blackberry Lime with Coconut gelato
Pina Colada with Oregon Strawberry ice cream
Strawberry Lime with Mango sherbet
Meyer Lemon with Blackberry Cobbler ice cream
Meyer Lemon with Rocky Road
